How To Care For Gas Furnaces

Maintaining, cleaning and repairing gas furnaces are the best ways to keep your home warm for a long period of time. This will article provides some helpful tips for the most common heating system – a gas forced air furnace. Of course, be sure to consult the owner's manual or a furnace repair technician for specific or needed instructions of the furnace.

First have your heating system checked regular and get furnace repair when needed. This regular checkup will keep the furnace running safely and efficiently while avoiding untimely repairs. Gas furnaces are usually safe, however, an unmaintained system can create the deadly odorless gas, carbon monoxide. Also, a well maintained furnace is like a well-tuned car. It will run better and use less fuel.

Clean and change your furnace filters regularly. Usually furnaces have one or two filters throughout the system. When these filters get dirty, less air can pass through, making the furnace work harder. Some filters can be cleaned by water but others need to be replaced. Before the winter season arrives, be sure to check the filter size and stock up on extra filters to have on hand.

Check to see if the furnace kicks on before the winter is already here. If it doesn't turn on make sure the electoral switch of the furnace is on and that the circuit breaker to the furnace is one. Make sure exhaust vents are not blocked. The furnace will shut off if the various pipes are blocked. Of course if you can't get the furnace to turn on at all be sure to contact a furnace service company.

If you smell gas from your furnace evacuate the house immediately and call the gas company. This can be a very dangerous for not only the people inside the home but everything outside the home.

So follow these tips to make sure a home gas furnace is running properly and get any furnace repair when needed. This will ensure you won't be left in the cold with a broken furnace.

Keep Everyone Comfortable and Save Money By Setting The Thermostat

No matter the size of the house, everyone has trouble keeping a comfortable temperature for everyone in the home. Monitoring the furnace and air conditioning thermostat throughout the year will help you ensure that everyone is comfortable while saving energy costs.

During the warmer summer months, the air conditioner thermostat should never be set below 78 degrees Fahrenheit. On the other hand, the setting should never be higher than 68 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter. By keeping these temperatures, you will maximize the energy savings of the household.

If people are uncomfortable, whether they're too hot or too cold, adjust the temperatures gradually. Raise or reduce the temperatures by just one degree at a time. Try this for a week. Each one-degree adjustment for an eight-hour period can reduce the energy bill costs significantly. Eventually you may be able to change the temperatures by three or four degrees and remain comfortable. This will help save a drastic amount of money.

For example, during the winter you can set the thermostat lower than 68 degrees, even getting it down to 65 degrees will greatly safe money. To counteract those who may be cold, dress in warm clothes. Wear wool socks in the home or invest in several blankets. In the long run, you'll save money without too much discomfort.

So if you are looking to cut costs on energy, make minor adjustments to the furnace and air conditioning thermostat.

Dangers of Avoiding Furnace Repair and Tune Up

It's important that people get car work done through regular oil changes while checking any other problems after wear and tear. This is just part of owning a car, however, very few people realize that home furnaces run three to four times more than a family car runs. Yet people hardly focus on the same maintenance regimen or furnace repair for their home furnace, which protects not only the family but all the valuables inside the home from the harsh winters.

The average lifespan of an Ohio-area furnace is around 15 to 20 years. With regular furnace repair and maintenance, it can even last longer and run more efficiently. Furnaces produce flames or fumes that may contain the lethal carbon monoxide. If the levels of carbon monoxide spike in your home, it may become a death trap.

Furnace repair checks several things, like gas pressure. The center of the furnace operation is the natural gas combustion. Various valves regulate the amount of gas pressure which is burned. If the pressure is incorrect then the flames can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Furnace repair will also check all the safety devices. Of course, the functions of the fail-safes are to keep you and your furnace safe. Although if a safety device, like a shutdown system, falters then it puts you, your family, your home and your furnace in great danger.
Regular maintenance will also check the venting. This is important to make sure that the fumes and gases are dispersed correctly instead of pooling in your home. Airflow in the house is very important to not only your safety but also to an evenly heated home.

Finally, a tune up should have a technician check all electrical usage. This can greatly help you save money because your furnace may be eating up a lot of electricity. Electrical problems can also cause a great hazard inside your home.

So there are a lot of things that should be regularly checked on your furnace. Remember, just like a car, furnace repair is equally as important as an oil change.
